An Introduction To The Melbourne Music Scene

If you’re here, chances are you’re an independent artist either in Melbourne or potentially coming here soon and looking to experience or participate in the local music scene. Well, I’ve got great news for you! Melbourne is one of the best places in the world for live music. The community’s diverse and you’ll find a large variety of music styles and communities. You’re sure to find a place that you fit right in!

Compared to Sydney, Melbourne is more gig friendly to live musicians and artists since its scene is less regulated. Fitzroy and Brunswick have some of the best locations for live music, and you can find anything from the popular garage grunge scene to the neo soul sounds that pioneered the independent musician movement here. Other than live performances, you can discover local artists on Triple J Unearthed and find some top picks for Melbourne artists.

On a Friday night (if I’m not in bed by 9:30), you could probably find me close to the Fitzroy area or right on Brunswick St. at the local pubs checking out the live acts. For Friday nights, I definitely recommend you check out The Night Cat in Fitzroy to hear some great live music from local artists and DJs. If you’re after some bigger live acts, then check out my last blog on the Top 5 Live Music Venues Within Melbourne. They always have some incredible acts.

As an independent artist, Melbourne is a city to start building your career in. There’s no other city in the world that you’ll find a more diverse and welcoming music scene. This is a great place to experience a tight knit artist community and discover the kind of music you love listening to and taking part in.

Pretty much, I love this city and there’s a reason I’ve set up my music business here. Melbourne is welcoming, diverse, and anyone can find a home here. It’s a great place for artists to discover their sound and launch into the next step of their careers.

As always, keep making awesome music, and I hope I get to meet you some night in Melbourne on the local scene!
